Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, the head of the Islamic Republic’s judiciary, announced that the judicial system is operating in a full “war footing” when dealing with what he described as “spies, traitorous elements, and the foot soldiers of the invading enemy.”
Reports indicate that he emphasized that, until further notice, case handling will follow wartime conditions rather than the legal standards applied during normal circumstances. Mr. Ejei stated that the judiciary has adopted a different approach in this area compared to ordinary times.
These remarks come as, since the start of Iran’s national uprising, the Islamic Republic’s judiciary has arrested and executed a number of citizens on charges such as espionage and cooperation with Israel.
