THE ISLAMIC REPUBLIC SENTENCES FOUR MORE DETAINEES FROM THE NATIONWIDE UPRISING TO DEATH

According to reports, Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Iman Afshari, sentenced Mohammadreza Majidi-Asl, Bita Hemmati, Behrooz Zamani-Nejad, and Kourosh Zamani-Nejad, four detainees from the January protests, to death on Monday, April 13th.
Reports say the individuals, arrested on January 9th, were charged with “operational action for hostile states”, “assembly and collusion against national security”, and “destruction of public property”. In addition to the death sentences, they were each sentenced to five years in prison and asset confiscation. A fifth defendant in the case was sentenced to five years and eight months in prison.
Human rights groups say the details of the charges and their attribution to the defendants are unclear, and that the confessions were allegedly obtained under pressure and torture. No further information has been released about the trial process or their current conditions.
